Court Replaces Arrest of Brother and Nephew of Catholicos of All Armenians with House Arrest


The Armavir Regional Court of First Instance has lifted the arrest imposed on the brother of the Catholicos of All Armenians, Gevorg Nersisyan, and nephew, Hambardzum Nersisyan, and has imposed alternative measures of restraint: house arrest, a 1 million dram bail, and a ban on absence. The key basis for the court’s decision was the defense team’s arguments that all important witnesses in the criminal case have already been questioned, and the fact that the defendants are at large cannot hinder the investigation of the case.

Archbishop Bagrat stated that he is unacceptable for house arrest on bail and a ban on leaving the country, considering it the most insulting measure. Defense attorney Hovhannes Khudoyan stated that the prosecution is illegal, based on false evidence and does not imply a criminal procedural goal. He also noted that the case is being considered in the context of an anti-church campaign, with the isolation of a clergyman with influence within the Armenian Apostolic Church, which, according to him, facilitates the campaign against the church.

The defense team of Archbishop Arshak Khachatryan has sent the published videos to international experts, the results of which are almost the same: the videos have been processed, the sound and image do not match each other. On the day before Lent, on Barekentan, a Holy and Immortal Liturgy was celebrated at the Mother Cathedral of the Nativity, presided over by His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians. At the end of the sacred ceremony, a prayer for Christian unity was performed in front of the Holy Table of the Descent of the Mother Cathedral, as a summary of the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity organized by the Vatican and the Ecumenical Patriarchate on January 18-25, which this year was dedicated to Armenia.
